Music Lessons
For our February meeting we were pleased to welcome retired music teacher Nigel Davies. After a music degree at University College Cardiff Nigel enjoyed a distinguished teaching career, including Head of Music at Marlwood School, Alveston and Director of Music at Redland High School, Bristol. He is also Director of Music and organist at Dursley Parish Church.
In his reflections on music that has had special importance to him Nigel took us on a journey from Bach (Magnificat) to Shostakovich (5th Symphony) and Villa Lobos (The Little Train of the Caipira) including Welsh hymns, nursery rhymes (Roger Quilter's 'A Children's Overture) and Reginald Dixon playing the Blackpool Tower Ballroom organ. He even included a recording of a performance on Dursley Parish Church's organ, which is maintained by SVMC's Tony Cawston. In all of this Nigel's love of music shone through. Appropriately Nigel's DJ for the evening was our own Webmaster Kim who was one of Nigel's pupils at Marlwood in the 1980s!
All in all this was a thoroughly enjoyable evening which made braving the cold more than worthwhile.
